  • Horses: Stepperiders rents reliable horses for solo-trek. You will be taught how to ride your horse and manage a pack horse. How to take care of your horse(s) and be safe.

  • Tack: We will show you how to pack your equipment and secure it on your horse(s). It is possible to rent from us the equipment for the riding horses and pack-horses.

  • Itinerary: where to find water and grass for your horses, terrain, dangers etc

  • Communicating with herders: how to ask for lodging or food to a herder family, how much to pay, customs.

  • Culture: customs, taboos, dos and don’ts.

  • Language: essential Mongolian language phrases.

  • Safety: dangers and annoyances, horse thieves. You have to prepare an emergency plan in case of injury: who to contact, nearest hospital, insurance etc. We highly recommend you bring a satellite phone and GPS tracker with emergency button.

  • Behind those big brown eyes: understanding the Mongolian horse.

The minimum training for people renting our horses is 5 days and horses can only be rented from June 1st (possibility to start the training end of May).

We charge $95 per person per day for solo training, this includes all meals and accommodation in a ger. You will be training with the experienced horsemen, so please decide on your dates as soon as possible, then contact us to get your deposit in to lock in those dates.

Tour Itineraries

Solo Horse Trekking in Mongolia

It is possible to start solo trek training in the Summer. If you decide to rent our horses you will have to train for a minimum of 5 days, otherwise you can choose  the duration of your training. We are only renting horses and equipment. If you decide to go on your trip with our horses you will have to let us know in advance to make sure we have all the equipment  and horses ready. It is highly recommended to travel with our horses as they are well trained and much more reliable than horses you would buy to a herder. The price per horse is  700 USD and we will refund 175USD(25%) when you are back at camp. The equipment is 150USD, horse (50USD for the pack horse) and includes the saddle, bridle, hobbles, sticks, ropes and saddle bags. You can also bring your own equipment if you prefer. I would recommend that you have your equipment ready to start practicing packing everything on your horses. You should also have an idea of where you'd like to trek but  we will help you defining the best route based on the weather conditions, available grass and water and the number of  days you need to trek. You should also make sure you have a proper emergency plan in case one of you gets injured on your trek: embassy phone number, insurance phone number, international emergency clinic (you can check  SOS Medica) etc. I would suggested closed front stirrups as being dragged by your Horses are o ne of the main risks. Then light camping equipment is recommended. Basic food can be  bought in UB  and is  some small villages in the countryside, up to you to decide if you want to bring some other special things with you. Also a water filter could be useful. Therefore, we do not rent GPS trackers and satellite phones. Most solo trekkers rent them in their country with the insurance and bring it to Mongolia.

Lastly, On your trek you will spend money on food and for the entry fees of national parks. I would also recommend  to have a Mongolian sim card with internet. All of this is cheap so you shouldn't be spending more than 5-10USD/day.
